EVs - 7th-Generation Volkswagen Golf Hits U.S. Shores Soon

golf-7If there is one car that will help Volkswagen on its goals towards world domination, it is the Golf. This plucky little hatchback has seen duty in literally dozens of countries, including America, where its reputation as a solid, efficient, and fun performer precedes it. Now Volkswagen is bringing a new Golf to the U.S., its seventh generation of the reputable hatchback, and this Golf comes with a bevy of turbocharged engines.

The biggest change is that the new, base engine for the Golf is a 1.8 liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 170 horsepower and 184 ft-lbs of torque. This engine is a good bit smaller than the naturally-aspirated 2.5 liter engine it replaces, but with no compromise on power. No word on fuel economy, but expect it to be frugal. We already did an in-depth look at the other changes to the new Golf, including less weight and an optional start/stop system, so I won't repeat them here.

Buyers opting for the turbodiesel-powered Golf TDI will end up with a new 2.0 liter turbodiesel engine cranking out 150 horsepower and 236 ft-lbs of torque, while delivering fuel economy that should be well over 40 mpg. We can totally dig that, though Volkswagen didn't mention specific fuel economy figures.

Finally, for you speedfreaks out there, there is the new Golf GTI, boasting a 2.0 liter gas engine making 210 horsepower and 258 ft-lbs of torque...or there abouts. Volkswagen hasn't settled on the final numbers, and it doesn't look like we'll get the GTI's diesel-powered cousin, the Volkswagen GTD. Then again, that could change. Just don't hold your breath.

EVs - Fisker Furloughs Workers, Hires Bankruptcy Lawyers

fisker-karma-rearThe vultures are circling the headquarters of Fisker Automotive, and the clock is ticking as the signs of an inevitable bankruptcy continue to pile up. Fisker has put its more than 200 employees on furlough earlier this week, and with Chinese investors backing out, management has reportedly hired lawyers to begin bankruptcy proceedings. This is the end, my friend.

Or maybe not quite. Reuters reports that Fisker has hired "restructuring" lawyers from Kirkland & Ellis to prepare for a possible (though we say probable) bankruptcy filing. Fisker had hoped to find salvation from Chinese automakers Geely and Dongfeng, but both companies pulled out, leaving Fisker up a creek without a paddle.

Not that things were looking good for Fisker, especially after founder Henrik Fisker left the company over disagreements with management on the future of the automaker. Henrik had been pushing to downsize Fisker, which may have been the only real chance for the green car maker to survive on its own. Alas, management won that battle, but without cash, there won't be any new cars built.

Then again, Fisker hasn't built a car since last summer, their contract with battery maker A123 may or may not be void, and natural disasters have taken a huge chunk out of the company's bottom line. Whether Fisker ends up liquidating, restructuring, or being bought out, things look rather bleak for this once-promising automaker.

EVs - Tesla Model S Wins World Green Car Of The Year

tesla-awardThe world automotive press has been lavishing praise upon the Tesla Model S for most of the past year, and plenty of magazines and news outlets have awarded their most prestigious awards on the Model S. Well Tesla CEO Elon Musk can add another feather to his cap, as the Model S was awarded the World Green Car of the Year award.

Competing against automakers from all around the world, the judges had to choose between the Tesla Model S, the all-electric Renault Zoe Z.E., and the Volvo V60 plug-in hybrid. That means it was two EVs up against a diesel plug-in hybrid...and the Model S won out. Again.

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk had this to say about the latest accoldates for the Tesla Model S;

"The success of Model S is a critical step towards the widespread adoption of sustainable transport and we are grateful to the World Car of the Year Jury for the recognition.

Winning the 2013 World Green Car award is great acknowledgment of what Tesla has accomplished with Model S in the last four years."
